Throwback to a graphic journalism short story that Throwback to a graphic journalism short story that was published in BIG FISH magazine in September 2008. I was commissioned by the magazine's editor to cover the Communist Party of Greece's (KKE) annual festival and report back in the form of a graphic journalism piece, in the tradition of Joe Sacco. In that particular year, the country's Communist Party was celebrating its 90th anniversary since it was founded. Throwback to an editorial illustration piece that Throwback to an editorial illustration piece that was published in BIG FISH magazine in April 2009. I was commissioned by BIG FISH magazine's editor to interpret an article by journalist Kostas @KBourousis about PASOK, Greece's ultra-corrupt socialist party which had fallen out of grace with the public. The journalist secretly entered an open audition for young party fanatics who could represent the next generation of PASOK in their upcoming preelection commercials. I read the article and created a single page illustration and a series of spot illustrations. The party's logo is a green sun and their branding colour and everything they decorate, from pamphlets to headquarters, is green, hence the greenish fever dream. Reposting MaxAndreone who just made a great reel that presents all the appearances of The Smiths in comics, incl. #TalesofTheSmiths 1 - “Tales of The Smiths” a 464-page graphic novel biography that chronicles the youth of the members of the British band The Smiths, showing their musical influences and the cultural context that led to the group's formation in 1982. Written and drawn by @ConChrisoulis 2 - 'Deadline' was a legendary British counterculture magazine in the late 80s and early 90s, known for launching the iconic Tank Girl. "Whatever happened to The Smiths?" A short three pages story that satirizes Morrissey and his band, drawn by Jamie Hewlett @Hewll of @Gorillaz fame. 3 - “Chrononauts” is a science fiction comic created by @mrmarkmillar and @seangordonmurphy which mixes humor, action and time travel. The plot follows two adventurous physicists who develop technology to travel through time and end up getting involved in chaotic missions that challenge both the past and the future. In the third issue, Danny Reilly returns to the past, becomes the leader of The Smiths and plans to dethrone Morrissey, forever changing the band's destiny. 4 - "Morrissey," a 16-page immersion of curiosities and details about Moz, with text and illustrations by @LukeyMcGarry. 5 - "The New Adventures of Hitler" is a highly controversial British comic written by @Grant.Morrison and illustrated by Steve Yeowell, published between 1989 and 1990 in Cut and Crisis magazines. The work blends political satire, surrealism, and alternate history, exploring the idea that Adolf Hitler lived in Liverpool before World War I. Morrissey unexpectedly emerges from a closet, melancholically singing 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now'. 6 - “Menina Infinito” is a graphic novel by @LyraRockstarr that intimately and melancholically portrays Brazilian youth in the 2000s, marked by pop culture, indie music, and small everyday dramas. It's an award-winning comic, considered an affectionate portrait of a generation that grew up among blogs, mixtapes, and concerts. Throwback to a graphic journalism short story that Throwback to a graphic journalism short story that was published in BIG FISH magazine in March 2008. As the financial crisis in Greece started kicking into high gear, I was sent on an assignment by BIG FISH magazine's editor to witness, interview and cover an event held by Klimaka, a homeless support NGO, at Klafthmonos Square in Athens. The event was a public sleep-out on one of Athens' most central squares and it was meant to raise awareness on the rise of homelessness in Greece's capital, but certain politicians did not turn up, despite public pledges. The illustrated article turned into a graphic journalism short story that blended my ongoing practice: autography, cultural memory, and sociopolitical tensions.
